Joining the 47th Labor Consultation Office BPJS

It is a well-known fact that the Social Security Badan Penyelenggaran Jaminan Sosial, commonly known as BPJS, is divided into two parts: Labor Ketenagakerjaan and Health Kesehatan. It is also well known that companies are obligated to enroll their employees in both. However, many people may not correctly understand the insurance coverage and the restrictions on participation due to differences in employment types. This time, I would like to delve into the details of BPJS.

[Participants and coverage details]

When registering one employee for Health BPJS, all the people included in the family card (Kartu Keluarga/Japanese resident card) will be registered. On the other hand, Labor BPJS is basically for workers, so one employee is registered to participate. Health BPJS allows one registration per person, meaning the same person cannot be registered with two companies. Therefore, when an employee changes jobs and joins the company, he or she cannot register unless he deletes his previous company's registration. However, Labor BPJS requires one registration per employee, so if you have a concurrent job, you can register at each company. However, it is more advantageous for employees to add old-age security (JHT/Jaminan Hari Tua) and pension security (JP/Jaminan Pensiun) to their previous savings, so when changing jobs, it is generally better to register after deleting the previous company's registration.
In terms of coverage, Health BPJS only includes medical coverage, while Labor BPJS consists of five types of coverage. 1) death benefit (JKM/Jaminan Kematian), 2) workers' compensation benefit (JKK/Jaminan Kecelakaan Kerja), 3) old age benefit, 4) pension benefit, and 5) unemployment benefit (JKP/Jaminan Kehilangan Pekerjaan). When a company registers an additional employee, the insurance premium amount is automatically calculated based on the insurance premium rate and wage amount applicable to that company, and the insurance premium amount to be paid is determined.

[BPJS registration for apprentices]

Recently, the Jakarta Japan Club has been very enthusiastically working to educate Japanese companies on the use of apprentices (Magang). Apprentices are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, as it is assumed that they will be educated in the workplace, rather than in employment. However, since you will be required to work on-site, you are required to enroll in Labor BPJS's death benefit and worker's compensation insurance. I think this is appropriate as a precautionary measure. However, when I try to register through the Labor BPJS system, the program to choose which coverage to join does not appear. You cannot join unless you have 5 sets. As a company, we want to keep costs to a minimum, so we do not want to take out insurance that is not mandatory. This is possible through a very manual process of not registering through the system, but by bringing an Excel file with the required information filled in to Labor BPJS. It will take some time at first, but from the next month onwards they will be able to respond via e-mail etc., so we recommend that you do so properly.
